When God Sends – Yard Chickens
A few years ago – I encouraged my family to start raising chickens. It seemed like a fun and sustainable way to produce our own eggs. RIGHT! But did anyone listen to me at the time – NO!

However, after Covid hit – eggs prices went up. I persevered, and finally convinced one of my daughters to give it a try. She had a few fails, but this year she has been very successful. There is nothing better than fresh farm eggs. Our breakfasts have never been the same since we started getting our own eggs.
Fun thing with EmmaLah and her chickens is we all pitched in – even my 80 year old mother – to built the chicken coop. This allowed us to spend quality time together as a family, and it brought us even closer. I really enjoy taking treats to EmmaLah’s chickens. The hens always cluck and hop around excitedly when they see me coming.
I will say I have been slightly jealous, because where I live we cannot have chickens. But it’s been a joy watching EmmaLah’s chicken-raising journey. Someday when I get moved I plan to have chickens. I personally love watching them and feeding. It has been truly a rewarding experience to be involved in helping EmmaLah with her chickens!
Guess what… that all changed three weeks ago when God sent me a colorful rooster and two hens to our garden in Montserrat. I couldn’t believe it when I saw them wandering around the yard, scratching at the ground and exploring. It seemed like a little miracle had taken place, and I couldn’t contain my excitement. I sure have enjoyed feeding them our left overs both morning and night. It’s amazing how quickly they’ve become part of my daily routine, and I’ve cherished every moment with them.
I told our gardeners please do not eat my chickens when I am gone. They reassured me that would not eat them. But they could not make any guarantees if they got out the yard. The gardeners chuckled, promising to do their best to keep an eye on the budding flock.
The rooster has been especially vocal in the mornings, crowing to greet the new day, and it’s become a comforting sound that I look forward. Actually sometimes he is little confused what time of day it really is and I find it endearing how he tries to honor the sunrise no matter the hour.
So God sent me yard chickens to enjoy during my time in Montserrat.
